The line about "..godmothers with two heads and bad breath..twice." What's all this twice stuff? First with the line about holding the clerics responsible twice, and then the Dreamlord telling Amy he's seen her dreams, some of them twice. While the first two make sense with the jacket!Doctor theory, this one just seems to be a throwaway line to mess with the heads of people like me. :P

The First and Second Doctors get another little cameo. They've shown up quite a few times now, the First Doctor in particular - his library card was pretty notable.

Eleven loves namedropping so much, and then the quip about buying the painting at the restaurant - when it's one of the most famous, hah. And all the references to his paintings, and just the way his room was set up ILU PROPS/DESIGN TEAM.

The mentions, both directly and indirectly, to Rory. Vincent can see her sadness and that she's lost someone. And she's crying not just because she knows how Vincent will die, but I think she's subconciously crying for Rory. The Doctor slips up and mentions Rory and Amy immediately goes WHO? as if it struck a chord in her. Then Amy says to Vincent that she's "not the marrying kind". Ouch. The Doctor's not the only one who can see the giant invisible elephant in the room. This was a fairly stand-alone episode, as are all the historical ones, but it certainly tied in with everything else well enough.

Which leads me to thank the brilliant writer, Richard Curtis, for his work on this. It's his first DW script, but I could see some of his style in the writing because of his tendency to take funny and sad moments and swing them around so much that they give you whiplash. He's best known to me for writing the S4 series finale of Blackadder, which was incredibly poignant and yet so funny and then everything just hits you and makes you want to cry. [tangent] Series 4 of Blackadder was set in WWI, and thus we all know how it ends (time can't be rewritten sometimes) - both this DW episode and the Blackadder finale portray their events/characters with respect and they become much more real to us, while injecting humor but at the same time not giving us a cop-out of an ending (and in fact making the ending gorgeous and sad and beautiful).[/tangent]

To echo one of my above comments, "Bad things don't spoil the good things or make them unimportant HI RORY NICE TO SEE YOU THERE. The Doctor has come a long way with Rory, from first thinking he was kind of dull to becoming pretty great friends and respecting him - and always respecting what he had has with Amy.

The invisible space chicken was the only thing that really didn't mesh with anything else, but hey, it's science fiction. XD It struck a chord with the Doctor, both of them being alone, and with Vincent, being misunderstood and treated wrongly. Awwwww.
- This also fits in with one of Moffat's (and New Who's) recurring themes, being that some of the 'villains' are all morally grey and/or not really villains at all. This episode didn't really have a 'bad guy'. Neither did 'Planet of the Dead'. The difference being that I love this and hated the other. :P

So. All in all, one of my favorite episodes of New Who ever. Definitely top five overall and completely wins out as best historical episode.
