...wherein I attempt to watch new movies this year and see how far I get.

Definitely less intense than the television meme, and I've got a better structure for this one, even, because listing by the day I saw it is pointless.

For the sake of argument, TV movies count (otherwise I would be shelling out ridiculous amounts of money), miniseries do not, and I'm thinking about letting film adaptation of plays count, because they're long enough and also because of the Tennant/Tate Much Ado About Nothing. (Tennant's Hamlet was on stage but filmed as a legitimate movie so hey).

Also, it's my meme and I'm allowed to make the rules.

SO.

I'M MORE THAN OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS FOR MOVIES GUYS. Or play along with your own LJ and I'll come check it out! Movie watch-alongs are especially fun so if you feel you have the need to be the first person ever I watch a specific movie with, let me know.
shinydinosaur: (Default)

I have a feeling I'll be able to do this without too much of a problem, with all the new stuff I'm watching/catching up on lately, so why not. Just have to remember to update. xD Not gonna count repeats. (Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] harbek  .)

Without further ado... )

I didn't make it to my ridiculous goal of 500 new episodes of television in 2011, but I darn near got close with an official count of 410. (It would probably be more like 425 due to numerous Colbert Report episodes I never counted but hey.)

This list includes: click to see my most-watched shows of 2011 + stats )

Anything else I should be doing stats for?
Total hours of television watched, I'm kinda intimidated by the idea of summing that up..

Totally taken from Tumblr here.

Could Be Anything, Therefore Nothing.: How to Care for Your Sherlock Fan as Reichenbach Draws Nigh

1. DON’T be the first to mention “The Reichenbach Fall.” After reading this post, you may be tempted to gauge your fan’s sanity. “How are you feeling about Sunday?” you may be tempted to ask. But your fan is still on a “The Hounds of Baskerville” high, soaring through life on cheekbones and maybe!Mystrade and I-don’t-have-friends-I-only-have-one. The denial will end soon enough.

2. DO offer to watch “The Reichenbach Fall” with your fan. No one should have to go through that trauma alone. Don’t be offended if your fan refuses the offer, though. No one should have to sob like a baby in public.

3. DON’T check up on your fan too early after the episode. Your fan will, as mentioned before, be crying like a baby. Allow a decent interval of mourning. It’s only appropriate. Use the time to read reviews of the episode so you know whether to be prepared for the worst.

4. DO check up on your fan at some point after the episode. Call on Monday. Call on Tuesday. Go to their house on Wednesday and drag them bodily into the sunshine. Do whatever is necessary to ensure their well-being because they will probably forget.

5. DON’T tell your fan “It’s only a TV show.” You are attempting to offer comfort. Instead your fan will shout “You’re right! It will never be reality - REALITY IS WORTHLESS” and shut themselves in their room with ice cream, internet and a stack of DVDs and never leave.

Guys, this is legit printed out and tacked onto my bedroom door already. I plan on sending a few to friends and friend-fans too. It's hilar but OH-SO-TRUUUUE WHYYYY

Ew no take it away.

Your 'new and improved' layout is crap, I can't even post a comment without it taking a billion seconds and acting like it's frozen in hell, the new 'easier' way of choosing a user icon makes me shudder and want to stick with just the default for the rest of my life.

I want my subject lines back. You kept the old ones by making them bigger bolded font at the beginning of old comments but I WANT IT BACK. The new colors are bright and annoying and I'm sure any sort of prolonged exposure to it will give me a nightmare of a headache trying to read long comment threads WHICH I CAN'T EVEN SEE RIGHT. It's like OH FLOATY BUBBLES SO PRETTY AND NEW but the old way worked and I was happy with it and I liked it and maybe it didn't look all 2011 but it was very functional and it's an older website and I loved that it reflected that while still being my favorite place to go online for socializing. Sometimes simple is better.

I seriously have never gone up in arms about ANY. SINGLE. CHANGE. you have ever implemented but this is pissing me off so much that I can't just sit back and ignore it this time. It's like you WANT us to leave so you can shut down the site or your leader is the biggest troll on earth or SOMETHING. If this was an April Fools joke, then it would be an epic one because shit is hitting the fan so hard. Your update comments have already reached like 27-28 pages as I sit here and they are all negative.

IF IT'S NOT BROKE DON'T BREAK IT.

TL;DR: DO. NOT. WANT.

And now I'm going to bed after watching the trailer for The Hobbit one last time because it is good and right and beautiful and knows how to make older things work in the current year without making the fanbase rage like hell.

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] moerlin at As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ
I was gonna update this with much happier stuff, but for the past week I've just been so enraged with LJ's asshattery that I've had it to here.

In case you didn't know, on 12/12 they first announced sneakily on the Russian journal of LJ's design guy that with new changes being implemented tomorrow, there will be no more subject lines in comments and that this change was "non-negotiable" (good round-up and translation here). I'm sure you all realize that this will basically make fandom and RP communities unusable. LJ's staff, however, doesn't give a shit. At least 18 pages of 100% negative feedback didn't sway them.

They've backpedaled some and will make keeping comment subject lines optional in some S2 styles, but the default (that 99% of communities are running right now) will decidedly be subject-less! Not to mention that their new and frankly, fucking ugly design will take forever to load and make the site a pain to use on mobile browsers.

And oh, it looks like they might be taking away the drop-down menu to select icons as well, so you'll have to load all your icons as pictures to select them. Lovely. (I will beta-test tonight to see if this is actually true.)

Really, I don't know why I'm surprised. LJ is always fucking with the parts of the site that actually work and breaking them, so this is just another instance of that. Because seriously, who are subject lines hurting by just being there? (And no, it can't be a matter of server strain, considering the new "graphic" interface will definitely be using up more resources - so much fun when there's DDoS attacks!)
As far as I know, they've never once listened to their customers, so those thousands of comments already posted probably won't do shit. I've left a message expressing my concerns about the new comment pages here anyway; so if you want to do that too, go for it! If anything, it helps with the rage. ;)

FYI: Dreamwidth is feeling Christmasy has reacted to LJ's bullshit and has open account creation (no invite codes needed) for the rest of the week. Might be a good idea to get your back-up or new home, whatever the case may be, up and running now.

I'M BAACK~

My computer cord finally died on me so I had to wait like 10 days for the replacement to be mailed to me. SO SLOW GAH. And it finally arrived this afternoon. x___x

What have I been doing in the meantime?

1. Finished my finals for first semester - and for the record, I got 2 Bs and 3 As. I'm freaking excited! My parents don't even know since I first saw my grades yesterday at like 11pm at a party.

2. Made tons and tons of things, kinda. Here's a TARDIS and lots and lots of Pokemon: Pikachu, Shuckle, Mew, Charmander, Squirtle, Clefable, Ponyta, Lugia, Articuno, and all four original Pokeballs. With plans of waaaay more on the way, it's just what I've done according to the colors I have, and when I had them. Lots of blues and reds and yellows, not so much greens or pinks. Hence lack of Bulbasaur. (Which is now a total of 71 different ones, so I could probably make Six's coat if I didn't mind the eystrain.)

3. Set up my Etsy store again. Only has three items right now, but this is my fave one and apparently the internets agrees. It's so lovely and I had fun putting it together and experimenting.

4. Dyed my hair red today. It was brown with reddish tint to it (not in that pic much) but it grew out like whoa, so now I'm more of a red/auburn!
Spent like four hours today doing it (and by that I mean my little eleven year old sister put gloves on and did the whole process herself which was about three hours worth of work - she did it last time too and it was fantastic, and this time she cut my split ends off for me and it looks nice)

5. Watched movies + caught up on House, Ringer, and much more QI. So for movies, I've seen Winter's Bone, which was brilliant and made me way more excited for Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games, and Gattaca which is now my #1 fave hardcore science fiction movie ever. I didn't expect to cry at the end so all of a sudden tears was whoa. And then I watched the extras on the DVD and the 'epilogue' that they cut out at the last second just took my breath away and sent chills down my spine at the end. I need a version where it's left in. Omg. Could probably write a whole post on how fantastic Gattaca was in every sense. It's from 1997 and I swear it was written for 2010, it's so, so relevant and I'd love to see it be in curriculum for genetics classes if it's not already.

6. Went to the most amazing Christmas party that a friend hosted. I was with old and new friends for 12 straight hours and made so many more inside jokes and moments that we'll never forget. Had tons of homemade foods and desserts, watched Muppets Christmas Carol, played a rather action-packed game of Spoons (it isn't fun until someone gets hurt) and lots of just wonderful socializing. Met my evil twin who is crazy awesome. She's an English major, we spoke with British accents for an hour or two. she looks very much like me down to the hair and glasses, ships the same alt!ships for Harry Potter fandom, and even recognized my cross-stitched TARDIS which surprised me. :D

7. Finally achieved my goal of getting one million NP on Neopets. Yeah, you heard me right. The games are addicting and free, and I have friends who've stayed on as long as I have (seven years now) so it's nice to reconnect. Totally used other computers to do it of course, for maybe an hour or two a day, but it's nice and relaxing and I've always wanted a million points in their game currency and now I have it. \o/

8. I also saw a very dear friend of mine in a great production of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, and had about five other mutual friends come too. He was the most hilarious Malvolio ever and I had to keep covering my mouth because I couldn't keep a straight face. Every time I turned around to hide my laughter, at least one of my friends had tears running down her face or had their heads hidden. It was great. :D

Good news: This is finals week for college so my mind's a bit scattered but after that, I've got lots of free time on my hands and I've been fighting stress by stitching a lot. And the complements from college people are really motivational.
I also have an 89 in my test average for math which is amazing. No idea what my total grade so far is but shouldn't be lower than an 80.

Bad news: I frikkin got fired from my job after all that hard work busting my ass running that studio - and the district manager never asked for my side on anything, just sent a message to the temp manager at my studio who'd been there a few weeks and told her to let me go. :| :| :|
So woo, no stable income and next semester is creeping up on me in exactly a month. Also I totally just sprained the top of my foot and walking on it is painful as hell. I'll get a bandage wrap for it tomorrow and then time to hunt for the crutches if it's like this Wednesday.

Other good news: I'm probably going to start making really awesome things with my geeky stitchery and selling it on like Etsy and local markets and stuff. Anything from magnets to pendants to phone charms or maybe even keychains - I have a feeling that a good deal of this will be commissioned because I can do literally anything with the finished piece and I can make it exactly how you want it. So if there's something you have in mind, let me know and I'll see what I can do.

As far as actual pricing, I have some guidelines in mind but I haven't bought any of the jewelry/charm/magnet/felt stuff which will probably need to be factored in. Once I know how much that will run me, I'll be able to list fair prices and all the other logistics.

And now, I bring you the awesome.

Mew, Shuckle, Pikachu, and Lugia

Lugia is what I'd consider a large sprite for obvious reasons. Took three hours to make, everyone else came in around two hours.

Pokeballs, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, and a Cascade Badge.

Each one of these took an hour to make - the Pokeballs would be excellent necklaces, magnets, or phone charms, for example. I also plan on making the Master Ball to complete the original pokeball set and then get the colors to make all the original badges.

surprise!non-Pokemon geekery: Rupees (Legend of Zelda)

The picture quality here is the best I could do but I assure you they are vibrantly colored and look fantastic in person. I can do SO much with these (they'll be individual pieces) so it's gonna be fun to experiment. Three hours total to stitch.

I also have a really cool Zelda-inspired project I'm working on for [livejournal.com profile] harbek and [livejournal.com profile] gildedmuse and myself that the former gave me some great suggestions for during a four hour chat to make it even more awesome, and when it's properly set up I'll start posting pictures. Again, very customizable.

AND WHY STOP HERE? There's only eighty bajillion different video games I can work with, more than a few fandoms that lend themselves to sprite-friendly things (Fezzes! Mario! TARDIS!) and I've already gotten a request from a friend to make a phone charm of a character from Adventure Time. Hah. :P

I've been three episodes behind and literally only started 3x05 a minute ago, but from what I see, the premise of this episode is YOU SUCK AS ACTORS AND CAN'T PORTRAY EMOTION AND PASSION PROPERLY CAUSE YOU NEVER HAD SEX. This is essentially what Artie is saying to Blaine and Rachel. WHY WHY WHY WHY WHY. *dislike*

ACTUAL TRANSCRIPT
"Can I be honest? This song is about sexual awakening, as is the entire musical. You two lack passion. Have either of you two actually... Look, I remember my first time with Britney, the excitement, the way it made me feel like a man..." "Look, as your friend I support your strange aversion to fun, but as your director I'm concerned." "Well, how do you expect to convey the human experience to an audience when you haven't even opened yourself up to one of humanity's most basic and primal ones?"

IT'S CALLED ACTING, ARTIE. :|:|:|:|

Also seriously the myriad of things you could do with this episode WHY THIS.

As soon as I finish watching the episode I can see where they were going with this, but right now I'm just pissed off.

cut for my thoughts and possible ranting )

EDIT: Okay so it wasn't AS BAD as I thought based on the opening premise but stiiiiiill. :/
shinydinosaur: (angel: puppet)
I'm running for Mayor for District 9 (over at The Hunger Games pages on Facebook) so if you'd like to take a minute to click here, I'd so appreciate it. The trailer is out today and IT LOOKS AMAZING! :DDD

College: My math teacher today singled me out as the only person in the class to get a particular question on the exam right that he'd pointed out during review time. He accidentally left part of a different question out so everyone got points back for that question, and if anyone was able to still solve it, he gave them bonus points. He also said that nobody got a 90 or higher on their original grade - but when my points were added b/c of that question, I got a 94. :D
I also have a B+ on my last Biology exam thanks to extra credit, which is my highest/next-highest exam grade so far. Freaking hard class. >_<

Television: I'll be finishing up Battlestar Galactica next week with a friend, so I'm super excited about that. Finally catching up on last week's shows tomorrow morning since I don't work until 4pm. House, Glee, Ringer, Colbert Report...

Projects: NEW! Completed this cross-stitch (pardon the trippy light, but that's the only picture I've taken of it so far) that's been framed for now (to keep it safe) and just needs a little ironing out before I permanently mount/frame it. The second one is more ornate and is coming along surprisingly quickly. Started drawing some more designs and am thinking about making various things for sale after this one's finished.

Right now I'm in the middle of a long-awaited organizing my room - [livejournal.com profile] jpgr just sent me nearly 45 Doctor Who magazines, for which I'm much obliged - and now I'm figuring out where everything should go, hah. :)
shinydinosaur: (Dollhouse: remember)
Of course, I'm still sending out cards in about a month, complete with personalized awesome if you'd like it, so sign up already! :D

First off, Reasoning With Vampires at Tumblr.
I'm an English grammar dork, and I've read all four Twilight books and thought they were a bit rubbish, but great for helping kids realize how not to write sentences/plot/characterization. Reading the entries is such a time-eater but in a great way, and I got through about two pages before some of them made me laugh SO hard. My 11 year old sister and I had tears in our eyes and were gasping for breath by some of them around page eight.
Some particular favorites: here, here, here and here.

Bonus: Part 1 of Alex reads Twilight. I love good snarkage.

Then, there's The Hobbit Blog.
Anyone who's a LotR/Hobbit junkie like me, is in love with the films, and/or interested in every aspect of behind-the-scenes from filming to directing costumes to sets to whathaveyou will love this. The production videos are so wonderful and fun and the last five seconds of video #1 had me tearing up from I'M SO HAPPY THIS IS REAL.

Fun story #1: I got a package today from MTI (Musical Theatre International) and freaked out before realizing that it was because I won a contest and then forgot about it. You had to answer the question about something in this particular book and then if it was right, you're put in a drawing for two versions of the hardback~ special 50th anniversary addition PLUS another hardback illustrated book by the same author. TL;DR: I won. XD
If anyone is interested, it's called The Phantom Tollbooth. I'd heard of it before but now I have no excuse but lack of time to read it. XD

Fun story #2: I was looking at the scifi/fantasy section of the bookstore before work today and passed two women talking about how to define science fiction vs fantasy books. tl;dr I spent about 10 minutes talking with them, one of them was a Joss fan too which was totally awesome. She showed me a book series she was reading with a female werewolf who takes charge and becomes the leader which is cool and more female-empowering and different all that. Not my type of book, really, but yay. :D
I'm currently bewildered as to why there is an authorized sequel to I, Robot. It's just sitting on my desk and I'm wondering if I should actually read it. And I was so tempted to buy another book and had to just stop myself.

brb signing up classes for next semester.

Post is public and comments are screened by default - anything with addresses/personal info in them will stay hidden.

I'm sending cards out again this year! Leave me your address to get a little piece of mail all your own. I did an exchange last year for Christmas/New Years/winter and it was a lot of fun and fueled my creative spirit. The sooner you comment, the more time I have to think of something cool for you. :D

Details:
- Cards will be send mid-December and will be totally generic/random. If you celebrate a holiday & would like a holiday card, please let me know. Or you can request getting some awesome postcard from who-knows where (at random from a pile of postcards I picked up all around Europe + my lovely state of Virginia), although I can't send a separate object with it is the only downside.

- Request stuff! Anything small that can fit in a regular card envelope is fine - story, haiku, doodle, handwritten letter, photograph, etc. List your top three fandoms/characters and I will see what I can do if you want to be surprised.

- I don't mind if we don't know each other very well, but I do ask that I at least know you & have interacted with you on LJ/tumblr/twitter/some other social network. (If I do know you well, expect awesome.)

- Yes, I really do like doing this. No, I don't expect anything in return. Getting something personalized in the mail is rare and fun, and the price of a stamp is a small price to pay for that.

- It doesn't matter where in the world you live, I will send you a card. Even especially if you live with unicorns.

- Addresses are kept private and I don't hang on to them after the cards are mailed. Which also means if I sent you something last year, I need your address again if you want something this year. :)

Meme time!

Two posts in the space of 30 minutes after not posting for two weeks? I'm gonna asplode.

Except they need proper backing and stuff to not fray from use, and I'm not sure how to do that and I don't have time. I made all of these about.. four months ago? Maybe five? and talked about them on LJ but never posted pics anywhere. Thinking about making some for Christmas gifts, although depending on who it's for, tone down the geeky or make like, idk, kittens or something. XDDD

My favorite, I think - and it's too cute! :D

My second favorite - totally beautiful but took forever to make.

I adooore this -and I can maybe even tweak it, add color or something else.

Definitely a challenge to make - but it made me laugh every time. Semi-obscure (depending on what group of fellow geeks I'm around) musical reference.

WIP - I could do so much with this if I had the time/creativity.

SUGGESTIONS? COMMENTS? TOO MUCH GEEK? TOO LITTLE GEEK? LET ME KNOW!

..cause I've been frikkin busy. 3 weeks in a row, I'm clocking 25 hours of work a week and 13 credit hours. So every spare moment of my life is taken up. On the plus side, my paycheck tomorrow (before taxes) is $412.

HEY GUESS WHAT. I went to the chiropractor last Monday! I already feel amazing although I need to go ideally 2x a week for 4 months or so - and my schedule barely lets me go 1x a week and that's in-between classes even. Definitely a stretch. Fortunately my new class schedule for second semester means I don't have super long days anymore and all last classes end at 1pm!

That paper I'm supposed to turn in tomorrow about my future career, for that class that told me last week how to write resumes and do job interviews/applications? Yeah, I haven't done it yet. Cause I've been working all the time. Hi, irony. You're looking sharp today.

Last week I used every tiny second to finish my first actual cross-stitch project, which I proudly present here.
Took me 5 months off-and-on, but 2/3rds of it was done by month three. The face was about.. 15-20ish hours to do, just the outline of the hand/flower was about three hours and probably 6-10 to color in, words take about 2-4 to stitch and color... I lost count after that. x_x
Start date: June 6 - End date: September 25ish.

I'm also thinking about doing some cross-stitch gifts for Christmas. Probably sticking with bookmarks and stuff since it's easier, depending on my work schedule during my college break. x___x;

Great episode and easily one of the best in the last 2-3 years. Welcome back, show. I've missed you terribly.

I also watched Law & Order: UK, wondered where on earth Jamie Bamber's character's gotten to, and -- hiii Peter Davison, I see you in that one 30-second scene there and that other two minute scene where you're all annoyed at people.

Edit: Well, this would be why he's not in L&O: UK, and also because I watched his character's final episode ages ago and forgot. -_-

Luther didn't record the last two episodes on my TV so Friday will be a Luther-fest. Wednesday and Thursday will be 11 and 9 hours of school and work, respectively.
