My little sister is trying out for the school musical, and although she knows she won't get to be Belle (she's in 6th grade and it's the high school musical, but they need chorus people and the dancing animated objects and stuff) she's determined to find a song to blow the teacher away during auditions.

Her: I need a great song!
Me: You're.. what, you're an alto?
Her: I don't know
Me: .....okaay, well... try this, can you sing this?
Her: No..
Me: Well, you're an alto then, or at least the 11 year old version.
Her: Are you?
Me: No, I'm a soprano. Means I can sing a lot higher than you. Also means all my favorite pieces won't work for you.
Her: What about this one?
Me: Errr.. I'd go with a song where the singing style isn't so distinct, plus you hear that song every time you turn on the radio. *searches for some alto songs*
*after ten minutes in iTunes*

Me: You're an alto, mom's an alto, Jen (our other sister) is an alto... You're like a whole different musical species!

And then I find some of Sherie Rene Scott's songs from Last 5 Years, thank heavens, but I don't think she likes how slow they are. Or anything from Chess or 'I Dreamed A Dream' which is totally an alto song... oh well. I remember all my auditions, and the song has to be approved as school-appropriate (as well as the musical it's from - with the exception of Les Mis, we love that one so much we overlook the sketchy songs like Lovely Ladies) so that really rules out a lot of potential songs. xD
shinydinosaur: (too silly)
Because I'm a dork and laughed way too much at this joke, and cause education-related humor is fun. Also because this is more fun to read than a rant on how I have the dumbest class/group/presentation ever. due Friday, and I'm the only one who's done any (read: all) the work.

If you don't get it, read it again. XD

In unrelated news, I need more iconspace, cause this is just getting ridiculous. :P

RABBITS

You may now return to your regularly-scheduled journaling.
Happy October 1st!
shinydinosaur: (angel: puppet)
Went to the doctor yesterday, found out exactly what was going on causing all the bad random pain, and am now taking great care to fix it. Which means no solid foods for like a week or whatever, but I'd rather live on liquids than have that pain forever.

Now I'm sitting outside in the lovely shade in the lovely weather and just relaxing and a bit of studying and playing my ipod with the speaker (since I'm outside and also have no headphones).. been playing a nice mix of music, currently working through the best of Rent stuff. And singing along, naturally. I wish I had a chance to warm up and sing loudly properly, or have someone with me to do a duet, but the tranquility is so relaxing either way. I haven't had a chance to just sit and be calm in so long, thanks to work and class and hectic, and it's such a blessing to have a nice weather day after all that rain and storm lately.

Plus the opera yesterday was SO fun, I was wiped out and fell asleep the second I got home last night, but a friend and I dressed up all fancy in black ballroom-type dresses and went down the spiral staircases.. so fun! And with Aida, I already know the general storyline, so it's a lot easier to follow than say, Madame Butterfly (which was just as pretty, but I swear Pucchini has it out for sopranos and arias (but I digress).

Gonna finish listening to What You Own and then head to class. <3

(Plus maybe someone will recognise what I'm listening to which would be completely awesome).
shinydinosaur: (Default)
Because I finally have a moment to breathe, although I've been feeling sore and crappy the last three days and now I feel like I can't sit up without losing my dinner. I also use "obsess" loosely, as in many cases it's just simply some kind of intense focus, whether temporary or not.

Also because I'm distracting myself over the fact that I still have not had time to watch the last Doctor Who (or any other show placing second or below on my TV priorities list).

Sidenote: I passed my karate midterm today! Had to perform the first two katas I learned over the course of a month, and I did it despite being so nervous I was shaking afterwards.

List time!

music, television, theatre )

Funny story, my awesome college friend who loves musicals and singing/acting and is finally learning about all the great shows out there, we were talking today and I swear this is the conversation verbatim:

Him: hey, that woman on Glee with the dark hair, she looks like she'd make an amazing Elphaba.
Me: Lea Michele - I mean, Rachel Berry? Ohpleasepleaseno.
Him: No, the one that plays her mom.
Me: ...Idina Menzel?
Him: Yeah, her!
Me: ...she was the original Elphaba, so...yeah.

I've been powering through the last two seasons of BSG thanks to Netflix, with average of like 4-6 episodes a week on good weeks, and I have eight left and then it's over. ;_____;

Spoilers for Season 4, mainly about episode 13.
Because I've gotten THIS far without being spoiled and why spoil it for others.

ASDGFGHJKL; )
And I hear the next episode will be awesome solely on the factor that Romo Lampkin's back. :DD

...considering I missed the first two classes, I picked up relatively fast on the movements (it's like choreographed stage fighting at this level, which I'm pretty good at) and I'm really enjoying it.

BTW, Karate is replacing Freshman English cause I PASSED THE EXAM! :DDD

And I'm still fighting what the doctor classified as an upper respiratory infection - like a bad head cold where your head feels like brinks, throat burns, and you use a box of tissues a day.. I've had this since.. a day or two after the hurricane... missed work Tuesday and wound up with a fever, got that managed today and went to classes (was at school 8am-7pm, easily my longest day) but felt really bleh, and I'm working tomorrow. 9am-7pm. Pray it does not go longer than that or I may die. Still have to have some homework done for Friday's history quiz and I don't feel up to it and I don't wanna rush. :/

For anyone wondering about hurricane Irene: I'd *just* finished watching Doctor Who when the power went out - and stayed out for about 4 1/2 days. Those were interesting times. But at least I could distract myself by WTF-ing over the latest episode!

The other thing distracting me lately is http://www.thecapitol.pn/ which looks like the beginnings of an epic ARG for The Hunger Games movie, due in 2012. AAAH HOLY CRAP THE SYMBOL.
Two days ago it was nothing but fuzzy, pixely distortion, then it was a little clearer yesterday, and now it's perfect. There was some Morse code bleeping in the background but it seems to have gone, and the 'Acquiring Signal' in bottom left is usually where the Twitter login is. I'll check it tomorrow and see what's up. ARGs are SUPER SUPER FUN when done right, and I participated in the Dollhouse ARG like.. forever years ago between seasons 1 and 2, via Twitter and game-centric sites and it was an absolute blast. 'Hacking' into Rossum, trying to help this agent out.. I still hear from my fellow CTPs every so often and I look forward to one where I can be even more involved.

Ew, must medicate and sleep. Thankfully my temperature's not creeping up again.

In exactly a week from right now, I'll be at the bus stop for NYC, and leaving in a week plus two hours. <33

Random: I painted my toenails this nice shiny purple b/c it seemed like the best course of action.
shinydinosaur: (angel: puppet)
So when I woke up I was pretty sure it was Monday. :/

Also I found out if I pass English then I gotta take minimum of two more credit hours to keep my financial aid the way it is (and I like the way it is). Unfortunately, all the stuff I reaaally wanted to take (American Sign Language, ballroom dancing) was either full or during a time that I already had class. So I'm gonna take a Martial Arts class instead and just play around with my schedule to fit it. Which is less interesting than ballroom dancing but more interesting than another English class or learning how to wield metal or something.

I honestly don't even know what day it is anymore, just that I have to go to to work today, again. Uuuugh.

I do have this one worry already about college though. Basically, I don't believe in evolution, the big bang, whatever... and I've never had to take a class advocating it or teaching it as fact before. My history class might not be too terribly bad once we get past that part, although the teacher seems fairly strict when it comes to policies and such (no water bottle? seriously? D: ), but I know Biology will cover it a lot - my teacher for biology is super nice and even gave us all opportunity to write down and give her our thoughts on what might worry us about the class or what we have problems with, basically. So hopefully I can work through that as I get to it.

Also I got up through episode 9 of s3 BSG. aaah it's so fantabulous and so many moments making me all happy and warm inside. I'll do my homework and study every day (once I get my assignments) and then reward myself with an episode when I'm done. <33333

Anywho, work soon. I miss talking to all my WL family and friends on LJ. Unfortunately, no matter how slow my job is on any day, we don't have any internet. :(

well.

Went to bed at midnight but woke up at 5AM... when my alarm's set for 7. :|

My bookbag is like fifty pounds of dead weight with all my textbooks so I'm doing the unthinkable and ditching my messenger bag companion for the drawstring college bag, and just dumping my pencil case and wallet and whatever else I need in there. Haven't even tried stuffing my computer in, but I figure I've only got an hour of free time and classes all around it, so I'll just bring along my sign language book to read errr.. no room for another book, maybe I'll just go to the library or something. Yeah. They have computers there. :)

PS: I was completely my best at work yesterday, being awesome and fixing stuff for customers and getting the computers and receipts system working when one of the other girls totally didn't know how to do it. \o/

FRIDAY
8am - MTH 152
10am - HIS 101
11am - BIO 101
12am - ENG 111

I am going to hate myself later for forcing myself to take math first every day. @__@

Except I could potentially find out today if I don't need to take English. \o/ Which also means I don't have to pay for two more books and at this point I'm happier thinking about less weight on my back rather than not paying for them. Still not sure if I'll be able to carry my computer with me unless I drag along my messenger bag or ditch my two notebooks and copy info to them later on. :/
shinydinosaur: (Wash: no wheel)
my high school was like. a hallway and some trailers. I got lost. more than I care to admit. howwillisurvivecollege. D:

Taped a cheat sheet notecard to the inside of my planner to remind me when and where I have to be for all my morning classes, especially since they require me to get up super early since the first one starts at 8am. For a whole semester. I'm totally used to waking up at 8am. XD

The good thing is that I should know between Friday and like, mid-next week if I passed the CLEP exam for my English class, and if I do I won't have to take it and still get full credit. And refund which means more money for other college-y things. LIKE COFFEE. That totally counts as a college-required item >__> I have been living off cold coffee-like drinks for almost two weeks now whatdoyoumeanitdoesntworklikethat.

And.. yeah. Apart from maybe a fleeting post on how my first ever day of college went, I'm not sure I'll be online for a while...not.. like I have been lately, but shush.

My first *full* week including classes classes looks like this:
Sun: work 2-6
Mon: class 8-1 & 6-7
Tues: work 3-7
Wed: class 8-1 & 4-7
Thurs: work 9am-7pm
Fri: class 8-1
Sat: work 1-7

And... basically repeat that for next week. so fuck yes I'm going back to NY in 3 weeks I need a break too. I could seriously just copy that whole schedule and just change my Tuesday workday to 9-2 and it would be the same. Possibly for the week after that too. And I still have to study and do homework and stuff. That Tues-Wed-Thurs-Fri is going to SUCK. HARD. Especially on my sleeping, there's no way I can deviate and stay up even a little bit later or have any resemblance of a life. So please don't tempt me, I will say yes and regret it later. @___@ (But I'm rocking at work with photography and sales even though our new system is made of suck and we've changed pricing sheets TWICE in as many weeks. hell yeah.)

brb cloning myself so one of me can work and one of me can go to school. then Ceri Alpha can go finish watching Luther and BSG and actually sleep normally again. ...why is it 1:30AM already?! D:

Cross-posting to [livejournal.com profile] crafty_tardis.

First off, I have a feeling this was long-awaited, so huge apologies. In the midst of RL getting rather complicated lately, my computer has gone through two personal crises (crisises?) and managed to dump all of my data down the digital toilet. Thank God for the likes of TinyPic and Photobucket.

Disclaimer reminder: I ask that my created letters, like the originals, not be used for any sort of profit. I'm not making any money off of them either. It's a labor of geeky, awesome, fandom love. <3

Without further ado:

Pics behind the cut )

...it appears that among other things, my computer ate the graph version of K, although it shouldn't be too tricky to make it with this picture - but I can remake the graph - as well as my L, where the only remaining copies besides the actual (as-of-yet incomplete) stitched piece are some print-outs. Thankfully, I can remake that one without too much difficulty.

I love how with some of these pictures, I clearly have the colors in mind, and then when it gets to actually making it, I'm like SCREW IT and I use a different color after all.

So this wasn't as spectacular an update as I had hoped, but I'm getting there. I've made charts for S, T, U, and W as well, in case anyone was wondering. I'm just waiting to post them in order. Suggestions are loved! I've got most of them figured out, it's just a matter of making a chart.
shinydinosaur: (Default)
It crashed. Totally and utterly crashed. Days after I put everything on it. Thankfully, due to a friend and Facebook and TinyPic and my Photobucket account from back like 2005, about... 98% of my photos will be successfully retrieved. The 2% remaining consists of pictures I downloaded from other places online anyway, or personal pictures that I hadn't got around to uploading. I am in the process of downloading 8,000 right now from Facebook alone. Not even kidding.

My documents - apart from chat logs which I'm hoping to eventually get back / if anyone who chats with me saves their chats too, that'd be awesome, and some school documents - the most important of which have probably been emailed at least half a dozen times - are gone as well, but they don't hurt me as badly, I think.

Right now, the most devastating loss is my video collection. I have all my audios, but my bootlegs are gone - I mean, I'm sure I can eventually restore my collection, since maybe 1/4th of it has been uploaded online, I've burned DVDs of some, and I'll be contacting people I've traded to in the past as well, but that's a LOT of video. I just updated my new trading site too, so I know exactly what I need to get back. It would be easier to mark what I actually DO still have. @_@ shinydinosaur.weebly.com

I also had all of Buffy/Angel/Dollhouse/Doctor Who/Torchwood, which may take an extremely long time to get back, but is by far one of the easier things to do. Some of the really old things may be harder to find, such as the original Taking Over The Asylum, for example (not the DVD release where they switched out all the original songs for new ones since they didn't bother to get copyrights back in the 80s for it).

All my own videos are mostly gone, sadly, but my drama class films are on various DVDs so I can always re-burn them or try and rip them off. And who knows what else is gone, but what can you do. Definitely not buying that brand of hard drive again, as it's become a 2 TB paperweight. A really expensive paperweight.

So. Probably cross-posting to all the musical trading communities that I'm on indefinite hiatus until I can rebuild my collection of videos. This sucks.
shinydinosaur: (Topher: not unlike pride)
So I've managed to procure some internets on my dad's computer, slow and virusy as they may be. And as I'm behind on my personal schedule to start posting pics of my secret project, I'll attempt to do a grouping now.

The only people I know of who knew of this project were [livejournal.com profile] harbek, [livejournal.com profile] chibichimera, [livejournal.com profile] platoapproved, and probably another person or two whose username I can't think off off the top of my head, and even fewer who have seen said project, and none who have seen 100% of it. SO.

Cut for dramatic effect... )

Hehehe...

I've officially started the hair-coloring process. Got my little sister to help me make sure every bit of my hair was covered in this nasty foam that smells like someone dumped a bottle of soy sauce on my hair but it's a lot redder.

In about 15 minutes I'm gonna go wash it out and finish the process. :D

In other news, my laptop's fan is dead and I'm amazed at how long I've managed to keep it working. Still under warranty, so I don't have to pay anything! Just have to wait three weeks for them to send me a new one. Sigh. Hopefully I can borrow my mom's Mac or something while they're gone next week, and can reinstall the cross stitch program to finish more of my secret project.

iPod battery's about to die, and need computer to recharge, so this may be the last thing I get to post in a good while. Ta!

I have no idea what I just watched.

Yay, Netflix! Maybe I'm just too tired from how late it was when I finished, but I figure if I understand very little about the plot of the movie by the time the credits roll, either I should go to bed or the filmmakers need to be more concise or something,

It's from like 1991, and it's a really small-budget film, I can tell. it's somewhat slow-paced but generally well-done to suit that style (the cinematography was great and the way certain scenes were shot avoided what would otherwise be a really cheesy or fake-looking moment). David Thewlis is in it with a minor role, but what made me totally sit through it was a yoouuung Paul McGann. With a really pretty voice. And face. :D

Apart from that, nothing really made much sense at first. It's also almost 2am right now. Thanks to IMDb boards I understood a bit more about the interesting mindtrip I just went on. It's definitely creepy but has a two-tone feel to it that I don't even know if it's supposed to reconcile or not. There's this whole thing between seeing/not seeing, imagination vs reality, and his view of the world vs everyone else. It's very bizarre and unsettling and incredibly cerebral, but I think I liked it well enough.

I can understand that it's not listed on TV Tropes but it doesn't even seem to have a Wikipedia page. That's how unknown this thing is.
EDIT: Well, actually it does but it tells you like literally nothing about it other than it's a French-British drama film with PMG listed as the third-main actor in it. Here's the trailer, please excuse the awful voiceover. Paul McGann shows up around 0:19 seconds in with a line, at 0:46 for a second although he's rather..different in that one, and another line at 1:11. <333

I'd definitely watch it at least once if you like mind-trippy, psychological horror, slower-paced, cerebral movies. Other ones that remind me of this as far as pacing and style (just more famous) are The Sixth Sense, The Good Son, Donnie Darko, eXistenZ (only that one's incredibly graphic and gore-fest), and Hitchcock movies.

The next movie I'll probably watch tomorrow night is another recommended to me as psychological thriller. It's called Dark Harbor, with Alan Rickman as a lead character.
